Race 1 – SMART TRACK AUSTRALIA MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres:
Stewards accepted the explanation offered by Mr. M. Kavanagh trainer of Padstow Bay with respect of the gelding being presented on course after the prescribed time.
After being placed in its starting stall Heart Thumper became fractious. Heart Thumper was removed from its barrier examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to start. Due to this the start of the race was delayed.
Wellingtons which pulled up in a very agitated manner was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding was suffering from heat stress. Due to Wellingtons being unruly in the mounting yard and having to be removed from the mounting yard before being unsaddled, and as to have no undue delay, and Stewards were satisfied that Wellingtons had carried its allotted weight, correct weight was declared.
At the start Mitta Mitta bounded, jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
Also at the start Heart Thumper jumped away awkwardly.
Shortly after the start Bunton commenced to buck and as a result dislodged its rider A. Stead. Bunton when riderless, then went through an inside running rail. Subsequent to the event the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Bunton had fractured a near fore leg and was euthanized on humane grounds. A. Stead was examined the Club’s Medical Officer and passed fit to continue riding.
In the middle stages Spider Web over-raced.
In the straight Mitta Mitta hung in under pressure and raced greenly and as a result of hanging in badly its rider N. Hall could not ride the gelding out in its normal manner. D. O’Sullivan trainer of Mitta Mitta was notified the gelding was now suspended from racing and must trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing again.
N. Hall rider of Mitta Mitta which was having its first start, however performed below market expectations explained the gelding raced greenly and hung in in the straight. A Veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
J. Noonan rider of Padstow Bay was found guilty to a charge of careless riding, the careless riding being that near the 1000 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of Spider Web, which had a tendency to over-race, and as a result that gelding was tightened in on to Caesar’s Revenge which had to be checked. Heart Thumper which was following Caesar’s Revenge was hampered in consequence. J. Noonan was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence midnight 26 December, 2012 and to expire midnight 3 January 2013, total of 9 race meetings, 2 city 9 country. In assessing penalty Stewards deemed the incident to be in the low range and took into account the racing manner of Spider Web which was racing to the inside of Padstow Bay.
Race 2 – SPORTSBET. COM.AU SV 3YO F MAIDEN PLATE - 1100 metres:
On arrival at the course Gone In A Minute which had been fractious in the float, underwent a veterinary examination and was deemed unsuitable to race. Acting on this advice Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Gone In A Minute at 12.20 p.m.
At the start Chutes, Greylami and Picked In Faith all jumped away awkwardly.
Also at the start May Rain knuckled.
Near the 800 metres Corasun was hampered and taken out off its course by Royal Scandal, which shifted out. Corasun was then obliged to race wide without cover.
Approaching the 600 metres Chutes which had commenced to over-race then had to be steadied off the heels of Mors Et Vita.
After passing the 600 metres Lady Rapunzel had to be steadied when tightened for room by Mors Et Vita, which in turn was hampered when tightened for room by May Rain (T. Sadler) which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. T. Sadler was severely reprimanded and notified to exercise far greater care when in similar circumstances.
Ms. R. Williams rider of Lady Rapunzel explained that the filly raced greenly in the straight and hung in under pressure.
Race 3 – PORTER PLANT F & M MAIDEN PLATE - 1400 metres:
After being caught wide early Mairead was then permitted to stride forward by its rider near the 1000 metres and obtain the lead.
In the straight Mairead laid in under pressure.
L. Nolen rider of Idol Fantasy which performed below market expectations could offer no explanation for the mare’s performance today, other than to state in his opinion it was disappointing and did not respond to his riding as he would have expected in the straight. A subsequent Veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Race 4 – REDBANK CORPORATE BOX GIVEAWAY MIDEN PLATE - 1600 metres:
Shortly after the start Shoalhaven which had jumped away awkwardly and as a result was marginally slow to begin, then had to be checked severely when tightened for room between Hawkesinthesky, which was taken out by Port Rashid, which shifted out abruptly and Kadar which was taken in by Oh Pity Me, which also shifted in.
In the straight Hawkesinthesky had a tendency to lay in under pressure.
I.Gundogdu rider of Oh Pity Me which performed poorly could offer no explanation for the mare’s performance today. A subsequent veterinary examination revealed mild soreness in the near fore leg however does not require a veterinary clearance .
S. Vella rider of Typo which also performed poorly explained that during the running of the race and also on pulling up the gelding was making an unusual respiratory noise. As Typo had left the race course, trainer, M. Young will be contacted in the ensuing days to ascertain if any condition had arisen that may have affected the geldings performance.
Race 5 – SITA TOUR OF VICTORIA COUNTRY SHOWCASE 0-62 HANDICAP - 2200 metres:
In the straight Warwarick had a tendency to lay in.
Race 6 – HYGAIN COUNTRY SHOWCASE 0-68 HANDICAP - 1200 metres:
After being placed in its starting stall Vee Fore became fractious and struck its head on the starting gates. Vee Force was then removed from it barrier, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who deemed the horse unfit to start. Acting on this advice Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Vee Force at 4.00 p.m. and ordered the following deductions –All monies bet for a win and/or place and concession betting on Vee Force to be refunded. All monies bet on horses prior to time of withdrawal of Vee Force are subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket:
Win Bets – 35 cents
Place Bets – 28 cents (first placegetter)
Place Bets - 28 cents (second placegetter)
Place Bets – 30 cents (third placegetter)
All monies bet after the Stewards declaration of withdrawal to be paid at face value of ticket
Soaked was marginally slow to jump away.
Rounding the home turn Soaked was held up for a clear run.
Approaching the 100 metres Oh Teary Me which had commenced to weaken then had to be steadied when tightened for room between Most Husbands (B. Rawiller) which shifted in whilst being ridden along and Soaked (M. Allen) which shifted out to obtain a clear run. Both B. Rawiller and M. Allen were notified to exercise more care when in similar circumstances.
B. Rawiller rider of Most Husbands explained in his opinion the gelding was disappointing and did not respond to his riding as he anticipated over the concluding stages. B. Rawiller further explained that he felt the gelding pulled up in a normal manner.
C. Robertson rider of Oh Teary Me which performed below market expectations explained in his opinion the mare may not be suited to todays track conditions and maybe feeling the effects of recent racing.
Race 7 - CITY OF BALLARAT 0-68 HANDICAP – 1600 metres:
At the start Annie’s A Gem knuckled badly and almost dislodged its rider D. Thornton. Due to this incident Annie’s A Gem lost ground.
Hell’s Kitchen was initially slow to jump away before being urged forward by its rider to obtain the lead near the 1400 metres.
In the middle stages Easton over-raced and got its head up on several occasions when being restrained.
N. Hall rider of Sayangku which performed below market expectations explained that the mare may be improved in races of a longer distance than todays event. A subsequent veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Race 8 - HYGAIN 0-62 HANDICAP – 1400 metes:
Aurum Spirit was slow to jump away and as a result lost considerable ground
Also at the start Morse Code jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
Shortly after the start Maldives had to be checked when tightened for room between Madica’s Pleasure which was taken in by Testa Grgia and Magical King, which shifted out.
In the early and middle stages Testa Grigia raced wide without cover and also over-raced.
Near the 300 metres Aurum Spirit was momentarily held up for a clear run.
Approaching the winning post Aurum Spirit when improving, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Magical King, which was shifting in under pressure.
C. Newitt rider of Muss which raced in a forward position today in comparison to its recent starts, explained that the instructions given by Mr. S. Morrish representing Mr. R. Smerdon , the geldings trainer ,were to ride the gelding in a forward position if Muss began well. Mr. Morrish when interviewed confirmed these instructions. As it is the Stewards intentions to interview Mr. Smerdon in regards to these instructions they adjourned this inquiry to a date to be fixed.
