Race 1 – PORTER PLANT SV MAIDEN PLATE - 1000 metres: 

So You’re Pius was slow to begin.

Zupasonic over-raced in the early and middle stages.

General Hap was inclined to lay outwards rounding the home turn and then in the straight was inclined to lay inwards.

S. Vella, rider of Zupasonic which was eased down over the concluding stages, could offer no real explanation for the gelding’s performance today.   A post-race veterinary examination of Zupasonic revealed no abnormalities.

Race 2 – CITY OF BALLARAT SV F & M 0-62 HANDICAP - 1000 metres: 

Spirit Of Choice was slow to begin.

True Desire commenced awkwardly.

Prior to rounding the home turn when laying out, Prettyhappyaboutit shifted out taking Black Carat out on to Cherish Harmony, resulting in Cherish Harmony and Black Carat making contact.

Passing the 300 metres Sahara Night which had been held up, had to shift out to avoid the heels of the tiring Black Carat and in doing so made slight contact with True Desire, which had also begun to weaken.

Siwa Lady was inclined to lay inwards under pressure in the straight.

C. Robertson, rider of Black Carat pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, that being that near the 700 metres he permitted his mount to shift out when not sufficiently clear of Sahara Night resulting in that filly having to be checked  and as a result shifting out and hampering True Desire.   C. Robertson was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence midnight Tuesday 22 January, 2013 and to expire midnight Tuesday 29 January, 2013, a total of 8 race meetings 3 metropolitan and 5 provincial. In determining penalty Stewards deemed the incident to be in the low range, took into account C. Robertson’s guilty plea and his recent record under this Rule.


Wayward Son knuckled on jumping away and as a result lost ground.

Hogan’s Warrior was held up for clear running for a short distance rounding the home turn.

Rounding the home turn Weathervane shifted in resulting in Eiffelman having to be eased off that gelding’s heels.   As a result of this Fleurissime which was following was inconvenienced.

Reckless Assassin laid in under pressure in the straight.

Approaching the 100 metres Faith ‘N’ Belief when improving, had to be eased off the heels of Malan, which shifted out under pressure.

S. Arnold, rider of Weathervane which performed below market expectations, could offer no explanation however was of the opinion that the gelding did not appreciate racing inside other runners.

M. Stephenson trainer of Good Thinking was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the filly where it led, which was in contrast with its recent race starts where it had settled towards the rear of the field.   Mr. Stephenson stated that it had always been the intention to lead on the filly however the filly suffered interference at the start at Caulfield on 5 January, 2013 and was slow to begin at Ballarat on 2 September 2012, therefore being unable to be ridden forward on these occasions.   Stewards noted his comments and reminded him of his obligations under the Rules to notify Stewards of any change of tactics.  A post-race veterinary examination of Good Thinking revealed the filly was slightly sore in both front legs and to have a poor post-race recovery.

Sava Nugget was instructed to remain on course for three hours, subsequent to this race for the purpose of obtaining a post-race sample from the gelding.,


Connections of trainer M. Cunningham advised Stewards prior to the running of Race 1 that it was their intention to have Master Troll ridden in a more forward position.   Master Troll commenced awkwardly losing ground, however was urged forward by its rider to obtain a position three wide outside the two leaders.

Master Troll commenced awkwardly.

Heavenly Hop and Delrazzi were both slow to begin.

Written Intent was inclined to pull hard in the middle stages.

D. Holland, rider of Antikita, stated it was not his intention to be as far forward today but after having began well he elected to let the filly stride forward rather than restrain in the early stages.


Cleaver which had been kicked whilst in the mounting yard was examined at the barriers by the Clubs Veterinary Surgeon who deemed the gelding unfit to start. Acting on this advice Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Cleaver at 3.19 p.m.   Subsequently Stewards ordered the following deductions to betting -   All monies bet for a win and’/or place and concession betting on Cleaver to be refunded.   All monies bet prior the late withdrawal of Cleaver to be paid at face value of ticket less the following deductions:-

12 cents in the dollar for win #5

14 cents in the dollar for place (#5 winner)

11 cents in the dollar for place (#6 Second placegetter)

No dividend for third placegetter.    All monies bet after the late withdrawal to be paid at face value of ticket.

Hinchley Wood was slow to begin.

Lady Krovanh was slow into stride.

Approaching the 1400 metres Chilean Plume had to be eased off the heels of Galway Gal, which shifted in slightly. B. Rawiller was reprimanded for shifting ground.

V. Duric, rider of Lady Krovanh, reported to the Stewards that the mare did not feel right in its action and was disappointing.   A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the off hind leg. Mr. P. Moody, trainer of Lady Krovanh, was notified he must be in receipt of a Veterinary Certificate of fitness prior to accepting for its next race start.

Race 6 – HYGAIN SV 0-68 HANDICAP - 1400 metres: 

Prior to correct weight B. Rawiller, rider of second placegetter Anlon, viewed the official video rounding the home turn before deciding not to proceed with an objection.

Passing the 1000 metres Me Hungi shifted out when it improved up on the heels of Coghills Creek and in doing so took Beyondagoldendream wider on the track.   As a result Beyondagoldendream raced wide for the remainder of the event.

Soaked was held up for clear running from on straightening until obtaining a narrow run to the inside of Coghills Creek approaching the 100 metres.   Soaked was placed in restricted room to the inside of Me Hungi, which shifted in resulting in Soaked being unable to be fully tested over the concluding stages.

J. Rule rider of Coghills Creek which led in todays event which is in contrast to its normal racing pattern stated that he was instructed to settle the gelding where comfortable and after beginning well it was evident that there would be no pace in the race he therefore elected to allow Coghills Creek to stride forward and obtain the lead.

R. Wheeler, rider of Rabbuka, was questioned regarding his riding on the gelding rounding the home turn and in the straight.   R. Wheeler stated that being mindful that Rabbuka is one paced he had  placed the gelding under pressure from the 800 metres then on straightening had allowed the gelding to balance up down the dip.   R. Wheeler further added that he was obliged to ease and shift out when he was disappointed for a run near the 250 metres.  R. Wheeler stated that the gelding ran to the line fairly however believed that other runners weakening enhanced his finishing position.   Stewards noted R. Wheeler’s comments if needed for further reference.


On arrival on course King Of Africa was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported to Stewards that the gelding had blood in one nostril due to external trauma and abrasions to the hip incurred while travelling en route to the course.  Acting on this advice Stewards ordered the late withdrawal of King Of Africa at 2.55 p.m. 

Prior to correct weight Stewards viewed the patrol firm in regards to ascertaining whether there were grounds for an objection between You Tell Me (4 placegetter) against Testa Grigia (3 placegetter). As Stewards could not be satisfied that any interference suffered was greater than the margin between the 3 and 4 placings, they did not proceed with the objection. It was established that from the 200 metres when racing tight against each other Testa Grigia and You Tell Me brushed on several occasions due to both horses shifting ground slightly.

Tiger Time and You Tell Me came together on jumping away.

You Tell Me pulled hard in the early and middle stages.

Approaching the 200 metres Royal Scandal shifted in making contact with Lenguita.   A short distance later Royal Scandal again shifted in and momentarily impeded Lenguita.

D. Lane, rider of Tinderbel, was questioned by the Stewards regarding his riding of the mare on straightening until placing the mare under pressure near the 200 metres.   D. Lane stated that his instructions were to ride off the pace with cover and as the mare has only a short sprint to hold up a final run from near the 250 metres.   D. Lane added that on straightening his mount was left flat-footed as the remainder of the field quickened off the slow tempo, before placing the mare under pressure leaving the dip near the 200 metres.   Stewards noted D. Lane’s comments if needed for further reference.

Race 8 – HYGAIN SV 0-58 HANDICAP - 1600 metres: 

Mr. D. Curran, trainer of Tully Costa, notified Stewards it was his intention to have the mare ridden more forward today in an effort to finish the race off. Tully Costa settled in a position just behind the leaders.

Bernadini Bullet which had momentarily caught its foot up in its barrier stall, was removed and underwent a veterinary examination which passed the gelding fit to race. Connections of trainer D. Hayes were advised a warning would be placed on the gelding for its barrier manners.

Tully Costa proved difficult to load. Trainer D. Curran was advised that prior to starting again the mare would be required to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards.

Bernadini Bullet commenced awkwardly.

Tribal Doctor was slow to begin and therefore settled further back than at its previous start.

Shortly after the start Our Rhomeo shifted out taking Joph La Hae out on to Dame Dugal.   As a result Joph La Hae was hampered.

Near the 1400 metres Dame Dugal shifted in resulting in Our Rhomeo which had also shifted out, having to be steadied.

Joph La Hae raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.

As the pace slackened near the 1300 metres Bernadini Bullet had to be steadied out to avoid the heels of Hammerhead.

In the middle stages Our Rhomeo got its head up on several occasions.

Dame Dugal raced wide without cover rounding the home turn.

Tully Costa was inclined to lay inwards under pressure in the straight.

Tribal Doctor laid in under pressure in the straight.

Vlad Duric, rider of Affetto, was questioned regarding the mare settling at the rear of the field today, compared to it’s most recent starts where it had been ridden in a more forward position. V Duric stated that it was the intention to settle off the speed today, however while restraining Affetto after beginning well the mare settled further back than intended. Stewards noted V Duric’s explanation.

Apprentice J. Londregan rider of Tully Costa the winner was fined the sum of $200 under the provisions of AR.137A(4)(e) for use of the whip after the winning post.
