Belfast Boy's love affair with Flemington

SOUTH Australia Belfast Boy’s love affair with the Flemington straight will see him return for the Listed Kensington Stakes (1000 m) on January 19 after his win today in the Flemington 1840-2013 Handicap.

Belfast Boy, a winner of two races and a second from his five Flemington starts, belied his betting rating - $21 - to swamp his rivals.

Trainer Gordon Richards said Belfast Boy had been racing well without any luck in his home State.

“He loves Flemington, he has troubles with corners, but bring him to Flemington and he’s a different horse,” Richards said.

“I’ll come back in a couple of weeks for another straight race. He’s better over 1200 metres.”

Belfast Boy, $21, scored by a head from Paaratte Pat, $8, with an identical margin to Chelembra, $15, third.

Red Rain, backed from $5 to $4 favourite, was one and three-quarter lengths away fourth.

Noel Callow said Belfast Boy travelled like a winner throughout. “He was always going to win in the run, happy days.”
