Race 1MIRFAK SV MAIDEN PLATE - 1215 metres:

Trainer D. Schmitt was fined the sum of $200 under the provisions of LR30A(2) for the late race day notification of rider on Paddy The Stallion.

Twin Spires and Ciel Vert both jumped away awkwardly.

On jumping away Flag Favourite was hampered when tightened for room between Living Image and Khatam, due to both horses shifting ground.

Also at the start Paddy The Stallion stood flat footed and lost considerable ground. Trainer D. Schmitt was notified that a warning would be placed against the gelding and should it perform similarly in future further action may be taken.

Khatam over raced in the early and middle stages.

Roshaca raced three wide without cover throughout.

From the 600m until near the 400m Twin Spires was held up when unable to obtain clear running.

Near the 500m Twin Spires had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Legions Choice, which had commenced to weaken.

In the early stages of the straight Correct Change laid in under pressure.

After passing the 200m Living Image had a tendency to lay out under pressure.

Near the 100m Roshaca dipped in the going and changed stride.

Approaching the winning post Twin Spires had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Living Image.

D. Holland, rider of Correct Change, which performed below market expectations, explained after beginning well the gelding failed to respond to his riding when put under pressure and further added it felt normal in its action on returning to scale. A post-race veterinary examination of Correct Change revealed no abnormalities.

Upon return to scale L. Londregan, rider of Miss Graceland, explained that the mare, which was having its first start today, raced greenly throughout.

Race 2PHOENIX DESIGNS SV 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1415 metres:

Correct weight was delayed while J. Cartwright, rider of Canova (fifth place getter), viewed the official Stewards patrol footage before deciding not to lodge an objection, correct weight was then declared.

Harveys True Heart jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the outside gate of its barrier stall resulting in D. Holland, rider of the gelding, losing the use of his offside iron and becoming unbalanced for a number of strides.  As a result Harveys True Heart raced was obliged to stride forward rather than be caught wide.

Big Paddy jumped away awkwardly then was hampered when tightened for room between Jaws and Flying Casino, which shifted in.

Siddle’s Birthday, which was marginally slow to begin, then commenced to over race and continue to race erratically until near after passing the 800m.

Approaching the 1000m Baccarat Ben, when being restrained by its rider, shifted out abruptly.

Canova raced wide without cover in the middle stages.

Nar the 200m Canova had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Our Swagman, which shifted out slightly.

Big Paddy (NZ) had a tendency to lay in under pressure in the straight.

D. Gauci, rider of Big Paddy (NZ), which was having its first start today and performed below market expectation, explained that he anticipated his mount would settle at the rear of the field and finish the race off strongly. However, added that the gelding was unable to finish the race off as expected.  A post-race veterinary examination of Big Paddy (NZ) revealed no abnormalities.

Race 3SAM MIRANDA WINES SV MAIDEN PLATE - 1515 metres:

Nastrada over raced in the early stages of the race.

After passing the 500m Test The Best had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room between Aubaine Bel and Delzuler.

At the entrance to the straight Test The Best shifted out and brush Nastrada (which was weakening) in turn taking that gelding out onto Soldier’s March.

Moira’s Charm had a tendency to lay out under pressure after passing the 200m.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on Nastrada D. Gauci, rider of the gelding explained that he had been instructed to ride the gelding where comfortable and that if the horse began well to take up a forward position. D. Gauci explained that after beginning fairly he elected to ride the gelding hard in the early stages to obtain a position outside of the leader rather than be caught wide. Trainer B. Hearps confirmed the instructions and added that the gelding had been slow away at its previous starts and due to the increase in distance was happy for the gelding to be ridden forward if he began well today. Stewards noted the comments of B. Hearps and reminded him of his obligation under the rules in respect to any significant change of tactics.

Race 4BENALLA VET CLINIC SV 0 – 58 HANDICAP - 1515 metres:

J. Pallot, trainer of Hezacruiser, advised the Stewards prior to the running of Race 2 that it was his intention to have the gelding ridden in a lead handy position should circumstance allow, contrary to its most recent starts. Hezacruiser settled worse than midfield after jumping away awkwardly.

Russwillcrow, which was marginally slow to begin, then had to be checked when tightened for room between Prancing, which was taken out by La Famiglia Ruby, which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out and Vinge Grande which jumped away awkwardly and shifted in abruptly.

Near the 1200m Hezacruiser had to be eased and got its head up when being restrained to avoid the heels of Mon Coeur.

Approaching the 800m Lauries Legacy had to be restrained to avoid the heels of Eternal Optimist, which shifted in.

After passing the 800m Boldly Go had to be eased to avoid the heels of Lauries Legacy, which shifted in.

After passing the 800m Hezacruiser, when over racing, got its head up on a number of occasions.

Near the 600m Hezacruiser, when being restrained to avoid the heels of Cashere Miss, shifted out abruptly hampering Jungle Ranger taking that gelding out wider on the course.

After passing the 300m Vinge Grande was hampered when tightened for room between Boldly Go and Prancing, which when layin in shifted in abruptly.

Approaching the 200m Lauries Legacy made contact with Eternal Optimist when obtaining a run between that filly and Pellegrino.

Approaching the 100m Cashere Miss was inconvenienced when tightened for room between Hezacruiser and Mon Coeur due to both horses shifting ground.

During the running of the race Eternal Optimist casted its near hind plate.

A post-race veterinary examination of Eternal Optimist revealed that the gelding had been galloped on on the near hind leg resulting in abrasions to the hock posterior, mid cannon and fetlock and the near hind plate was pulled.

A post-race veterinary examination of Russwillcrow revealed the gelding had sustained a puncture and abrasion to the near hind coronet.

Race 5TECHWOOL TRADING SV 0 – 68 HANDICAP - 2046 metres:

Shelbyville and Haiti both jumped away awkwardly.

Turning out of the straight on the first occasion Jade Raider had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Rive Gauche, which made the turn awkwardly and shifted out.

Also turning out of the straight Dixie Doll had to be steadied to avoid the heels of First Defence, which when being restrained to avoid the heels of Haiti, shifted in slightly.

Haiti over raced in the middle stages.

After passing the 500m Shelbyville was momentarily inconvenienced when tightened for room between Prussia Island and Stradabird.

R. Wheeler rider of Ultimate Surprise, which performed poorly, could offer no explanation for the geldings disappointing performance today.

J. McNeil, rider of Jade Raider, which performed below market expectations, explained the mare travelled well until placed under pressure at the 500m from which point she failed to respond to his riding. A post-race veterinary examination of Jade Raider revealed no abnormalities.

Race 6BENALLA TOYOTA SV 0 – 68 HANDICAP - 1415 metres:

Total Pursuit (NZ) commenced to over race approaching the 1200m and got its head up on a number of occasions when being restrained to avoid the heels of Grado.

Gaelstorm and Relative Velocity both raced wide without cover in the middle stages.

J. Duffy, rider of Munderoo, which was disappointing today, explained the gelding got its tongue over the bit and in his opinion choked down. Mr B. Cox, trainer of the gelding, confirmed that although the gelding did race with a tongue tie today however his tongue was over the bit upon return to scale.

Race 7BENALLA SIGNS SV 0 – 62 HANDICAP - 1215 metres:

Stewards accepted the explanation of Mr R. Wellington, trainer of Lughaat, for the use of the Club Colours.

At the start Mariposa Lily and Schoorwin were both hampered when tightened for room between Lourdeaux and Blanc Eclair, due to both horses shifting ground.

How Swede It Is and Klishina both jumped away awkwardly.

Borneo Jo (NZ) which was marginally slow to begin was then unable to muster sufficient early speed to maintain contact with the field.

After passing the 800m Mariposa Lily commenced to hang out and in doing so took Schoorwin wider on the track. As a result Schoorwin commenced to over race and was obliged to race wide for the remainder of the race.

Amalifi Coast raced wide without cover throughout.

Ferlax (NZ) laid out under pressure after passing the 100m.
