DAMIEN Williams found himself in an all too familiar position as the Sandown Stakes unfolded – watching young brother Craig beating him again.
Williams’ horse Morant chased valiantly, but he was no match for Mahisara, which Craig Williams partnered to an effortless win in the Group 3 race.
“I reckon he’s ridden against this guy eight times and beaten us seven times,” lamented Damien Williams.
While Morant ran up to his consistent form, Mahisara was a dominant winner following on from his success on Melbourne Cup day.
Craig Williams leaves on Monday for a six week contract in Japan, which includes the Japan Cup, where he rides Rulership, and World Super Jockeys Series.
Trainer Paul Messara said Mahisara was a horse who had to be allowed to run as he wanted and Williams rode the horse to his advantage.
“He actually quickened far better than I thought he would,” Messara said.
“Today was the goal for this preparation and we’ll draw up some battle plans with the owners.”
Mahisara, backed from $3 .30 to $3, romped home by two and three-quarter lengths from Morant, $7, with one and a quarter lengths to Raspberries, $4.20, third.
