Race 1 – TW PLASTERING F&M MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres:
Panarea commenced awkwardly.
Fantasy De Fleurs was marginally slow to begin.
Near the 1000 metres Allyouneedislove had to be eased when momentarily tightened for room between Panarea and It’s Variety, which shifted in slightly.
Approaching the 800 metres Allyouneedislove and It’s Variety raced tight for a short distance to the inside of Cyclone Jess (D Gauci), which shifted in when not quite clear. D Gauci was notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
Over the concluding stages It’s Variety raced in restricted room when racing tight in-between Cyclone Jess and Fantasy De Fleurs, both of which shifted ground.
N Callow, rider of Allyouneedislove, which was having its first start and performed below market expectations, could offer no explanation for the mare’s poor performance. A subsequent veterinary examination of Allyouneedislove did not reveal any abnormality.
C Treymane, rider of Panarea, which was having its first start, explained that after jumping awkwardly she had to ride her mount along in the early stages and believed this was detrimental to the mare finishing off the race today. C Treymane added that the mare raced greenly throughout the event. A subsequent veterinary examination of Panarea did not reveal any abnormality.
Race 2 – W & M CABINETS MAIDEN PLATE - 1600 metres:
Acting on a confirmed telephone call from trainer B McCarthy who advised that Lucky Elvis was lame in the near hind, Stewards ordered the late withdrawal of Lucky Elvis at 5.53pm. B McCarthy will provide a veterinary certificate with regard to the gelding.
Trainer G Carson was fined $50 for presenting Pelvstroem in the mounting yard without blinkers which are part of the gelding’s approved gear.
Ishikawa raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
Poet’s View got its head up and raced ungenerously in the middle stages.
Lobbs Bridge was held up for a clear run from the 500 metres until passing the 200 metres.
Passing the 200 metres Lobbs Bridge (D Larsson) shifted out to avoid the heels of Mrs Bean, which was weakening, and as a result hampered Poet’s View. D Larsson was reprimanded for the manner in which he allowed the mare to shift out.
When placed under pressure in the straight Seattle Storm lay in.
When questioned, B Higgins (Mrs Bean), which usually settles in a rear-ward racing position explained that he was given no specific instructions today, however after jumping well and with no early speed he elected to take up a forward position on the mare.
R McLeod, rider of Poet’s View, which performed poorly, explained that the gelding raced ungenerously however, was disappointing in its efforts today. A subsequent veterinary examination of Poet’s View did not reveal any abnormality.
Race 3 – BLACKWOODS 0-58 HANDICAP - 2080 metres:
Trainer M Sell was fined $50 for presenting Dominant Manner in the mounting yard without a crossover noseband, which is part of the gelding’s approved gear.
On leaving the gates All The While slipped, severely unbalancing its rider.
Passing the 1200 metres Kipsiro commenced to race wide without cover and continued to race wide for the remainder of the event.
Kempside, which had been held up from passing the 500 metres, had to be checked off the heels of the weakening Maniago near the 300 metres before shifting out and obtaining clear running.
For a short distance near the 500 metres Dominant Manner was held up for clear running.
D Gauci (All The While) explained that the mare did not feel right in her action in the early stages of the race however on return to scale appeared normal. A subsequent veterinary examination of All The While did not reveal any abnormality.
D Thornton, rider of Maniago, which performed poorly, could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance other than Maniago appearing to race flat today.
P Mertens (Kempside) was reminded of his obligation to not use the whip forward of the horse’s shoulder.
Race 4 – BS&S CHARITY GOLF DAY 8 FEB CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1600 metres:
Trainer G Strang was fined $30 for the use of the Club’s colours on Miss Dynamite.
In the early stages Secret Wand got its head up and raced ungenerously.
From passing the 1200 metres Secret Wand commenced to hang out and severely hung out rounding the home turn, proving difficult for its rider, P Mertens, to ride the mare out in his normal manner. Trainer J Scott was advised that prior to the mare racing again it must trial to the satisfaction Stewards. A subsequent veterinary examination of Secret Wand did not reveal any abnormality.
Near the 150 metres, when under pressure, Frisky No More (NZ) (N Callow) shifted in momentarily inconveniencing Kobe Queen before being straightened by its rider. N Callow was advised that he must attempt to straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion.
Race 5 – MERCEDES – BENZ BERWICK 0-68 HANDICAP - 1300 metres:
Benambra was marginally slow to begin.
Ethicist commenced awkwardly and lost ground.
Near the 900 metres Westend Smash became unbalanced when bumped by Champagne Love, which was taken in by Capturethedream, which shifted ground when over racing.
Lovernotafighter raced wide without cover in the early stages before being allowed to stride to take up a forward position near the 800 metres .
Capturethedream raced wide without cover from the 800 metres.
On straightening Westend Smash (V Duric) shifted in to obtain a clear run to the inside of Lovernotafighter and as a result Benambra, which had been held up, had to be eased and was hampered. V Duric was issued with a severe reprimand and was notified that he must be sufficiently clear when shifting ground in future.
For the final 200 metres Benambra was held up for a clear run and went to the line not fully tested.
The rider of Ethicist (D Stackhouse) dropped his whip near the 200 metres.
N Callow, rider of Danzareel, which performed below market expectations, explained that the gelding travelled well in the early and middle stages however, when placed under pressure, failed to respond to his riding. A subsequent veterinary examination of Danzareel did not reveal any abnormality.
D Stackhouse (Ethicist), explained that rounding the home turn, near the 300 metres he clipped the heels of Lovernotafighter, becoming monetarily unbalanced and shifted out to obtain clear running.
Race 6 – PETER & LAVALLA DAROSE –AFC 0 -58 HANDICAP - 1400 metres:
Prior to the declaration of correct weight D Holland (The Donch), 4th placegetter, viewed the stewards' video before deciding not to lodge an objection.
Jeune De Coeur got its head up and raced ungenerously in the middle stages.
Near the 900 metres He’s Ready over raced and as a result Parvenu (NZ) had to be eased and shift out and away from that gelding’s heels.
Near the 900 metres Jeune De Coeur, when over racing, had to ease and shift out away from the heels of Victorian Crown and as a result raced wide without cover for the remainder of the event.
Victorian Crown raced wide without cover in the early and middle stages.
Buster McGee was held up for a clear run from approaching the 400 metres until passing the 200 metres.
Rounding the home turn Diello Rose was held up for a clear run.
King Sudurka (NZ) was held up rounding the home turn until passing the 100 metres.
Over the concluding stages The Donch lay in and near the 50 metres had to be straightened by its rider D Holland away from the heels of Madame Sleeper.
N Callow, rider of Parvenu (NZ), which performed below market expectations, explained that the gelding travelled well however was disappointing in the way that it finished off the race. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormality.
Race 7 – CHANDLER MACLEOD 0-62 HANDICAP - 1000 metres:
Swingin’ Willie which was marginally slow to begin, shifted out and had to be eased off the heels of Edgycat.
Edgycat commenced awkwardly.
Approaching the 800 metres Ranjan had to be steadied off the heels of Nelson’s Victory (A McCabe), which shifted in when not quite clear. A McCabe was reprimanded and notified that he must be sufficiently clear when shifting ground in future.
Approaching the 600 metres Edgycat, which was over racing, had to be checked when racing in restricted room between Slewsay and Heroic Tale, which shifted in marginally when taken in by Ranjan.
Mr Bandit Country (NZ) raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
Heroic Tale was held up for a clear run approaching the 400 metres behind the weakening Ranjan, and did not obtain clear running until straightening.
Manihi Rocks hung out rounding the home turn and continued to lay out when under pressure in the straight.
B Rawiller (Swingin’ Willie) explained that after not beginning well he was unable to take up a forward position as instructed however in his opinion the gelding finished the race off well. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormality.
S Wynne (Slewsay) (5 placegetter) was fined $200 for failing to ride her mount out to the wining post. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account her good record in this area and that they could not be comfortably satisfied that her actions affected the result of the race.
