Race 1IVAN’S PIES SV 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres:

Shot Caller was slow to muster early speed.

On jumping Taraji struck the outside barrier partition and was marginally slow to begin.

Approaching the 1000m Twin Spires commenced to over-race badly and near the 850m had to be checked off the heels of The Unexpexcted.  Twin Spires continued to over-race until the 600m.

Malinga raced wide without cover from the middle stages.

Shot Caller was momentarily held up for a short distance near the 500m.  Shot Caller was then again held up from the 400m until approaching the 200m.

Ice Chiller was held up for a clear run rounding the home turn.

Pleasant Harmony (NZ) had a tendency to lay in under pressure in the straight and proved difficult for J Winks to ride out in his normal manner.

B Rawiller, rider of Twin Spires, explained that the colt was reluctant to improve to the inside of Pleasant Harmony (NZ) rounding the home turn and as a result struck the running rail.

L Nolen, rider of Bel Seal (winner), explained that he was given no specific instructions however after riding the colt at its first start at Moonee Valley on December 14 , in his opinion Bel Seal was not entirely suited by running in a forward position and today he elected to settle Bel Seal where it was comfortable.

Race 2TAB.COM.AU MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres:

Trainer Mr D Harrison was fined $50 for presenting Tycoon Trice to race in winkers which are not part of the mare’s declared gear.

After being difficult to load Gas Burner became fractious and cast.  After being removed from the barriers Gas Burner was examined by the RV veterinary surgeon and was found unsuitable to race and was subsequently a late withdrawal at 7.01pm.  Trainer Mr K Keys was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding and should it behave similarly in future action would be taken.

All monies invested on Gas Burner to be refunded.  Deductions applicable to bets placed on winner and placegetters prior to 7.01pm: 5 cents in the dollar for the Win #8, 7 cents in the dollar for place of winner #8, 5 cents in the dollar for second place #4, 6 cents in the dollar for third place #6 and 6 cents in the dollar for doubles bets.

N Callow rider of The Talker, fourth passed the post, lodged an objection against St Carlingwood, third passed the post, alleging interference over the final 200m.  On the evidence it was established that approaching the 200m The Talker, which was improving quickly, had to be checked off the heels of St Carlingwood which shifted out abruptly resulting in The Talker becoming severely unbalanced, shifting out and losing its momentum.  The Stewards were comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred The Talker would have finished ahead of St Carlingwood, therefore the objection was upheld and the placings were amended as follows: First place - Hermosa, second place - Sir Squiggle, third place - The Talker and fourth place - St Carlingwood.  As a result of this interference, Chit Chat which was racing just to the outside of The Talker had to be severely checked and lost ground.

At a later inquiry, after taking further evidence from R Wheeler, rider of St Carlingwood which raced greenly in the straight, Stewards notified co-trainer Mr P Morgan that an official warning would be placed on St Carlingwood for her racing manners.

Te Aroha (NZ) was marginally slow to begin.

Near the 1000m Hermosa shifted out causing some inconvenience to Tycoon Trice and The Talker.

Chit Chat was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

Rounding the home turn near the 300m Sir Squiggle which was held up behind Belli Laugh, raced up to the inside of that gelding and as a result Cosmic Del Rio, which was racing to the inside of Sir Squiggle, had to be checked.  At a subsequent inquiry A McCabe, rider of Sir Squiggle, was issued with a severe reprimand as Stewards were of the view that he should have made a greater effort to prevent his mount improving to the inside of Belli Laugh where there was insufficient room.

Near the 150m when being corrected by its rider St Carlingwood shifted in inconveniencing Sir Squiggle.

Passing the 150m Tiara Royale layed in and was steadied from the heels of Belli Laugh.

Over the concluding stages The Talker layed in under pressure.

Approaching the winning post St Carlingwood had to be eased to avoid the heels of Hermosa (J Childs) which shifted in under pressure.  J Childs was issued with a reprimand and advised to exercise more care.

P Keane, rider of Tycoon Trice, reported that the mare raced ungenerously in the early stages and proved difficult to ride.

Peninsula Dane got its head up in the early stages.

The Counterfeiter raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.

Rounding the home turn Peninsula Dane had a tendency to lay out.

B Rawiller, rider of Miss Mazzeo, explained that the pre-race intentions were to ride the mare in the same manner that she was ridden when she won at Cranbourne on December 1 and at its most recent start at Flemington on December 15 it had jumped well and for this reason led, which were not the intentions on the day.

D Thornton rider of Sapphire Mistress reported at scale that in his opinion the mare did not appreciate today’s firmer track.
