Double for Thornton

By Adrian Dunn TVN Saturday, January 5, 2013 - 6:22 PM

DAMIEN Thornton posted a city double today to keep within reach of Chad Schofield in the apprentice’s metropolitan title.

Thornton, who earlier won on Tariana, partnered Snow Cover to win a heat of the Swettenham Stud Summer Championship at Caulfield.

It took his city tally to 12, three behind Schofield, who won on Whisper Downs.

Trainer Jim Mason said Snow Cover is a horse who doesn’t appreciate carrying big weights and Thornton’s three kilo claim brought him in with 53.5kg.

Mason said Thornton gave Snow Cover, $15, the run of the race and the six-year-old responded to edge past a valiant The New Boy, $4.40, to win by a long head with one and three-quarter lengths to Dayita, $10, third.

“His first three runs were pretty ordinary, I wasn’t sure what was going on,” Mason said.

“I gave him a freshen up and I thought he put the writing on the wall with his last run at Flemington.”
