VLAD Duric continued his recent great strike rate when he partnered Gig to win the Fiesta Star Handicap at Flemington today.
Gig’s success completed a double for the Duric and Peter Snowden combination after they earlier won with Safeguard in the Christmas Season Plate.
The success of Gig and Safeguard took to 13 the number of winners that Duric has ridden in his past 50 rides.
And, he’s ridden six winners since last Wednesday for a season’s total of 42, which places him equal sixth on the Victorian jockey’s premiership.
Duric rated Gig, backed late from $8.50 to $8, perfectly and the injury-troubled mare responded by rallying strongly to hold out Al Aneed, the $5.50 favourite, to win by three-quarters of a length.
Tackleberry, well supported from $8 to $6.50, was one and a half lengths away third.
Paul Snowden, the Melbourne stable foreman for his father, said Gig endured a luckless run when resuming and he was confident she would run well.
“She is a filly that has problems, we try to space her runs,” Snowden said.
