Flying Skipper destroys punters

SA raider Flying Skipper’s win at Flemington may have destroyed millions of dollars of quaddies around Australia, but his win provided another remarkable story in Cup week.

Starting at $41 and paying more than $50 on most totes in the Myer Spring Fashion Stakes, Flying Skipper is trained in Adelaide by John Hickmott, the father of Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup winning trainer, Robert Hickmott.

Robert is the private trainer for leviathan owner Lloyd Williams at Macedon Lodge who won the Cup with Green Moon, and his father today said the win by Flying Skipper two days later was “truly unbelievable”.

“I didn’t really expect him to win today. I thought he’d run in the first five but not win.

"What a great week it’s been – that’s unbelievable isn’t it,” he said, looking as shocked as most punters who didn’t even know he was in the race.

Flying Skipper ran fourth in Adelaide last Saturday but Hickmott had no hesitation in putting him on the float and coming to Melbourne for today’s race.

Veteran rider Steven King said Flying Skipper had given him a really good feel.

“This is a really nice horse and he gave me a good feel. I know John rates this horse and now I know why,” 43 year-old King said.

His win continued the trend for veteran riders winning races as 49 year-old Jim Cassidy won the previous race, The Oaks on Dear Demi.
