PETER Mertens added another chapter to his remarkable association with Geegees Blackflash, winner of today’s Launceston Cup,
Mertens now boasts a Launceston and Hobart Cup among the eight races he’s won on the John Luttrell-trained six-year-old.
It was a case of third time lucky in the Launceston Cup for Geegees Blackflash, which ran third in 2011 behind Fast Future and second, beaten a head, last year behind Prevailing.
But, the 2013 Cup had Geegees Blackflash’s name inscribed on it from the time the gelding surged to the front on the home turn.
Geegees Blackflash responded to Merten’s riding as he comfortably held out the Tony Vasil-trained Lucky Angel with Dream Peddlar, third.
Hobart Cup winner Hurdy Gurdy Man, the short-priced favourite for the Group 3 race, went amiss with Glen Boss easing him out of the race between the 1000 and 800 metre mark.
