Race 4 – BC3 THOROUGHBREDS F&M MAIDEN PLATE - 1000 metres:
Stewards today concluded an inquiry into E Cassar’s riding of Valcountess in the early stages. E Cassar stated that as Valcountess had failed to finish its races off when being ridden behind the lead at its three previous starts, he was told not to bustle the mare but ride it where comfortable. He said that he was positive on Valcoutness from the gates but commenced to settle the mare passing the 900m, where upon Valcountess lost several lengths. He further said Valcountess travelled comfortably from the 700m but when placed under pressure in the straight ran on only fairly, despite not obtaining clear running over the concluding stages. He added that although it was his intention to settle the mare, his actions resulted in lost more ground then intended. Mr S Coombes, trainer of Valcountess, confirmed the instructions but expressed surprise at how far back the mare settled after E Cassar took hold passing the 900m. After consideration, Stewards were of the view that E Cassar’s actions passing the 900m, which resulted in Valcountess losing several lengths, were somewhat excessive, however; believed those actions did not warrant a charge under AR135(b) being addressed. E Cassar was severely reprimanded and told he must ride all his mounts in such a way as to not leave room for query. Trainer Mr S Coombes was reminded of his obligations to notify Stewards of any intended change of riding tactics.
