Johannapine bounces back

Horse racing news

Dwayne Dunn and Johannapine made amends for their last start defeat by winning the $70,000 Shadwell Farm Kentucky (USA) F&M Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Dunn received criticism from punters for going for home too late aboard the mare at Flemington last month. Johannapine flew home for second behind all the way winner Ravenous Lass, ensuring she was beaten for the first time.

However trainer Mark Webb didn’t listen to the naysayers and kept the faith with the four-time Blue Diamond Stakes winning hoop.

“We just had to put that race behind us,” Webb said before adding, “The track didn’t suit and I don’t believe Dwayne did anything wrong.

“Today Dwayne took the imitative which was good to see.

“There was no need to have been held up in front as they tend to hug the rail in these small fields and you can be caught up behind horses you don’t want to be stuck behind.”

Dunn said that although Johannapine got a little lost in the straight, he was pleased to see her “add an extra dimension to her racing pattern” at only her fourth start.

“She’s a better horse to be sitting third and fourth and be pinging off their backs but it’s good to know if we’re keen to lead on her in the future,” Dunn said.

Webb said that he is unsure where Johannapine will race next with options in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide in the next couple of weeks. She is only a slim chance of contesting the $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 25.
