Lane keeps cool, outrides claim

Apprentice Damian Lane thought he outrode his claim at Moonee Valley last Thursday night.

But in Lane’s own words, he only outrode his claim for “15 minutes” as he and his mount Green Roller were stripped of victory.

In his penultimate ride before heading home to Western Australia to celebrate Christmas, Lane guided Keep Cool ($9) to a short head win over Tuscan Fire ($4.60) who attempted to lead throughout. Elusive King ($6) was a further short head away.

“Its good to outride my claim today,” Lane said.

“The horse beat a decent staying field today as well, there were a few runners in the field in form.

“He didn’t have the best amount of luck last time at Moonee Valley and the blinkers really switched him on,” he added.

The application of blinkers also saw Adamantium win for O’Brien last Saturday at Flemington. Adamantium is set to have his next run in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) on New Year’s Day.

O’Brien post-race described Keep Cool as a “good honest horse” while also noting that Lane doesn’t need a claim on evidence of his well-judged winning ride.

“While he (Keep Cool) is in-form we’ll keep him going in these sorts of races,” O’Brien said.
