TEAM Hawkes pulled the right rein with London Lolly, which led throughout to claim tonight’s St Alban Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Last week’s Black Opal was an option for London Lolly, a daughter of dual Group 1 winner Lovely Jubly, who also won the Magic Millions, but the Hawkes family opted to wait for the Listed Race at Moonee Valley.
London Lolly, ridden by Glen Boss, didn’t disappoint as she speared straight to the front, dictated terms and lengthened well in the home straight.
Wayne Hawkes flagged the idea that London Lolly may have earned herself a trip to Sydney for a race like the group 2 Magic Night Stakes, a week before the Golden Slipper.
Hawkes said the filly had always displayed ability, but had not enjoyed the best of luck in her first couple of runs.
“Everything fell into place for her tonight,” Hawkes said.
“She has now won a Listed Race so job complete.”
Boss said London Lolly had been star-gazing at her first two runs, but was more focused tonight and that’s how it played out when the gates opened.
“She jumped, controlled the race and put away a very good field,” Boss said.
London Lolly, specked from $16 to $15, held off a determined Orujo, $4 with Bring Me The Maid, the $2.80 favorite, running home for well third.
