DEBUTANTE Montsegur made a spectacular debut in winning today’s Joe Brown Plate at Caulfield, but jockey Vlad Duric rates last Saturday’s winner Safeguard as the pick of the pair.
Montsegur pinged straight to the front, controlled the race and comfortably held out short-priced favourite Calcatta.
Duric described Montsegur, a daughter of New Approach, as “fast, real fast” as the filly cruised to a three and a quarter length win from Calcatta, the $1.90 favourite, with one and a quarter lengths to Register, $15, third.
He noted that Montsegur was “always going to win” and added that the filly was “strong on the line.”
“I think the one on Saturday is better,” Duric said.
“Safeguard has more scope, stronger and gave me a better feel. She (Montsegur) was nice, but the other one was better.”
Paul Snowden said Safeguard and Montsegur were both in the Blue Diamond and the Victoria’s richest juvenile race remained an option. Earlier in the season the stable won with Kuroshio at Fleminton.
“The original plan was for Safeguard to go to the paddock, but he pulled up good so we’ll keep him in work and keep him ticking over.
“This filly will do the same. The next couple of days will determine what happens from now. They’re both sound, it’s just a mental thing if they can keep up to the mark.
“She has always proved to us at home that she is above average.”
