Old fellow still tries his best

Wayne Hawkes openly admits nine-year-old stayer Fiumicino is past his best, but he also says the son of Zabeel still tries as hard now as he did in his prime.

‘Old’ Fiumicino found a bit of his best form last start when successful in the Listed $100,000 ATC Cup at Warwick Farm on December 1.

He carried top-weight of 59kgs then, and he’ll do the same again when he lines-up in Saturday’s Listed $100,000 Christmas Cup (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens.

“That Warwick Farm win took his earnings past $3 million – not many horses win $3 million during their careers,” Hawkes said today.

“Of course he’s past his best but you’d love to have a stable full of horses who try as hard as he does,” he said.

Fiumicino won the AJC Derby as a three-year-old, and two years later scored another Big-race Group 1 win by taking out The BMW.

“Those days are gone but he’s sound and a lovely horse to have around the place and he’ll go really well again on Saturday,” Hawkes said.
