RYAN Maloney was taken to hospital with a wrist injury and Beltrois was euthanised in a tragic postscript to today’s Red Tempo Handicap at Flemington.
Beltrois dived through a pack of horses to win, but jubilation turned to despair for trainer Robbie Griffiths, who part-owned the gelding with his wife Sharani and racing manager Don Healy.
About three strides after the winning post Beltrois faltered and fell, which catapulted Maloney to the turf.
Maloney was clipped by the heels of Winter King and it’s believed this is where the jockey sustained an injury to his left wrist.
Beltrois, a $21 chance, won by a long head from Go The Knuckle, the $2.40 favourite, with sustained a nose to Hotham Heights, $4.80, third.
Sadly, Beltrois broke a shoulder.
