RYAN Maloney undergoes surgery today to his left wrist following the tragic aftermath to the Red Tempo Handicap yesterday at Flemington.
Maloney fractured his wrist when it was kicked by Winter King soon after the winning post after he was catapulted from Beltrois, which faltered after fracturing a shoulder and regrettably had to be euthanised.
Victoria Jockeys Association CEO Des O’Keeffe said x-rays revealed that Maloney’s fracture was close to the joint, which complicated matters.
O’Keeffe said Maloney’s recuperation period will be determined by the extent of the surgery.
“Usually it is a 10-12 week injury, but it depends on the surgery,” O’Keeffe said.
Maloney added to his best-ever start to the season when he partnered Beltrois to win the Red Tempo Handicap.
It was the 27-year-old’s 45th winner for the season, which sits him fourth on the Victorian jockey’s premiership behind Brad Rawiller, Dean Yendall and Glen Boss.
