Race 1LAURELS FUNCTION CENTRE MAIDEN PLATE - 1210 metres: The start of the race was delayed when Sky Gambler sat down for some time in its stall.  After being removed, Sky Gambler was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and declared unfit to start. Acting on this advice, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Sky Gambler at 12.03 p.m. and ordered the following betting deductions:
All monies bet for a win and/or place and concession betting on the late scratching to be refunded.
All successful bets on horses prior to time of withdrawal are subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win bets – 3 cents; Place bets (1st) – 15 cents;  Place bets (2) – 5 cents; place bets (3) – 5 cents.

Mr M. Farrugia, trainer of Sky Gambler, was advised that before the gelding would be permitted to race again, it must officially trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

When the gates opened, Astro Lass shifted out abruptly after knuckling badly, almost dislodging J. Winks. Astro Lass then made heavy contact with Prospector’s Luck, which in turn made heavy contact with the hindquarters of Margie’s Dream, resulting in that mare being turned sideways. Consequently, Prospector’s Luck was severely checked and lost considerable ground. A post race veterinary examination of Astro Lass did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. A post race veterinary examination of Prospector’s Luck revealed the gelding to have grazes to both shoulders.

J. Mott, rider of More Please, which performed below market expectations, could offer no explanation for the gelding’s poor performance. A post race veterinary examination of More Please did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.

When being led back to the enclosure after the race, Sky Gambler broke loose from the control of the Clerk of Course and galloped a short distance.

Race 2NEWRY FENCING CONTRACTORS F&M MAIDEN PLATE - 1613 metres:  Rainbow Hussonet was slow into stride.
Shortly after leaving the gates, Grand Daughter shifted in and made contact with Beleven. Beleven then layed out across the heels of Grand Daughter (L. Nolen) and was checked. L. Nolen was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

Throughout the event, Beleven raced a little ungenerously and was wide without cover.

Over the final 100 metres, Grand Daughter was inclined to shift out under pressure.

J. Winks, rider of Orasun, which performed poorly, explained that the filly failed to respond to his riding rounding the home turn and was disappointing in the manner she finished the race off today. A post race veterinary examination of Orasun revealed the filly to have a cough and to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer Mr D. O’Brien was advised that before Orasun races again a Certificate of Fitness would be required.

Race 3PANTAC SECURITY MAIDEN PLATE - 1413 metres: Following the running of Race 2, Stewards were advised that it was the intention of the connections of Chicharito, which had been leading in its previous preparation, to take up a mid-field position with cover from the wide gate, if circumstances permit. Trainer P. Moody was reminded of his obligations to notify any proposed changes to riding instructions, by the prescribed time. Chicharito was ridden in a mid– to rearward position.

Preside and Prince Kilkarlen were both slow to begin.

Foranotherday began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Rhodesia, which became momentarily unbalanced.

Approaching the 1200 metres, Rhodesia was checked severely and shifted out away from the heels of Pleasant Harmony, which was being steadied when racing close to the hindquarters of Cosmic Del Rio.  As a consequence, Rhodesia made contact with the hindquarters of Oceanographer turning that gelding inwards slightly.

Oceanographer raced wide without cover from the 900 metres.

After riding in this race, B. Higgins complained of back spasms. B. Higgins was examined by the Club’s Doctor and medical officers and was transported to Sale Hospital.

N. Callow, rider of Oceanographer, which performed poorly, explained that the gelding travelled wide without cover for the majority of the event and, in his opinion, affected Oceanographer’s ability to finish off the race.

I. Gundogdu, rider of Cosmic Del Rio, which gave ground quickly passing the 400 metres and was eased out of the race over the concluding stages, explained that the gelding overraced in the early stages. He added that when he placed Cosmic Del Rio under pressure rounding the home turn, he was of the opinion that there was something amiss with the gelding. As Cosmic Del Rio had left the course, Trainer M. Goreham will be contacted tomorrow regarding the condition of the gelding after its return to the stable.

Race 4LORDS CLEANING SERVICE SHOWCASE BM72 HANDICAP - 1513 metres:  Aurum Spirit was slow to muster early speed.

For a short distance near the 1200 metres, Elwick Jack overraced with its head up.
Verification was held up for a short distance approaching the home turn.
When under pressure in the home straight, Makeadreamcometrue layed in and near the 100 metres, was bumped by Verification (J. Kissick), which momentarily shifted in. App J. Kissick was advised to exercise more care.

N. Callow, rider of Tallat, which was giving ground over the concluding stages, explained that in his opinion there was something amiss with the gelding.  A post race veterinary examination of Tallat revealed the gelding to have an upper respiratory complaint.

J. Mott, rider of Elwick Jack, which performed below market expectations, explained that the gelding overraced in the early stages and when placed under pressure rounding the home turn, failed to let down as expected. A post race veterinary examination of Elwick Jack did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.

After the race, B. Rawiller was examined by the Club’s Doctor and found to be unfit to continue riding due a gastric complaint. B Rawiller was stood down from his remaining engagement.

Race 5BENNETT ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS SHOWCASE SV 3YO 0-68 HANDICAP - 1210 metres:  On leaving the gates, Velonski, Sportscaster and Dark Arrow, which had begun awkwardly, were tightened between I’m A Zulu, which shifted in slightly and Royal Haunt, which jumped awkwardly and shifted out, bumping Dark Arrow.

Fine jumped awkwardly, became unbalanced and lost ground.

In the early and middle stages, Dark Arrow overraced with its head up and was inclined to shift ground.

Near the 900 metres, Fine shifted in away from Dark Arrow and made contact with the running rail.

L. Currie, rider of Cast Iron, which performed poorly, explained that in his opinion the colt raced flat today.

M. Gatt, rider of Dark Arrow, explained that the gelding overraced in the early stages and in his opinion was showing signs of coming to the end of its preparation. R Griffiths, trainer of Dark Arrow will be contacted in the ensuing days regarding the immediate future of the gelding.

Race 6SALE WATER SPECIALISTS 0-62 HANDICAP - 1110 metres: Stewards permitted French Friday, which normally races in a tongue tie, to race without that gear today after it was confirmed by the Veterinary Surgeon that the mare had cuts to both sides of its tongue.

Prime Ace and Graceland were slow to begin.
In the middle stages, Graceland raced keenly with its head up.
For a short distance approaching the home turn, Graceland was held up for clear running.
Rounding the home turn, French Friday was held up for clear running.

Race 7AUSTRALIA DAY RACES @ SALE 0-62 HANDICAP - 1713 metres:  Correct weight was delayed when Stewards viewed video footage of an incident involving Fantasy De Fleurs and Flirtatious approaching the 100 metres. After viewing the available footage, it was established that approaching the 100 metres, Flirtatious was checked after shifting out into a tight run between Spurring Success and Fantasy De Fleurs, which shifted in when contacted on the hindquarters by Flirtatious. In these circumstances, Stewards were of the view that any interference caused to Flirtatious was due to that horse shifting out onto Fantasy De Fleurs. Consequently, correct was given on the Judges’ semaphored numbers. At a later inquiry, D Smith rider of Flirtatious, confirmed the Stewards’ view and stated for this reason he did not lodge an objection.

On leaving the gates, Scotchontherocks, which had been standing awkwardly with the assistance of an attendant, began awkwardly and lost ground after losing its footing behind and unbalancing J. Winks.
Need To Exceed jumped awkwardly with its head up and lost ground.

In the early stages, Need To Exceed overraced and on occasions got its head up.
Also in the early stages, Fantasy De Fleurs overraced and was wide, before shifting in near the 1200 metres to take up a position behind Spurring Success.

Near the 300 metres Flirtatious which was being held up for a run, bumped with Fantasy De Fleurs when attempting to shift out from behind Spurring Success.
Passing the 300 metres, Need To Exceed was steadied when momentarily awkward close to the heels of Outback Ranger.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, Scotchontherocks was held up for a clear run.

Approaching the 300 metres, Fantasy De Fleurs became unbalanced after being bumped by Flirtatious, which was attempting to shift out from behind Spurring Success.

Approaching the winning post, Flirtatious was checked from the heels of Outback Ranger and became unbalanced, when Fantasy De Fleurs shifted in slightly, due to N. Callow gathering his reins after momentarily dropping his off side rein.
