Gingerboy got its head up when being restrained in the early stages.

Bonanza made the crossing near 1300m awkwardly, shifted out and hampered Gingerboy. During this incident rider C Downie accidentally dropped her near-side rein.

Approaching the 200m D Yendall accidentally dropped his whip after it was struck by the whip of H McKechnie.

Divi Filius layed out rounding the home turn and in the straight.

C Downie, rider of Bonanza, which compounded from the 700m explained that the gelding did not feel right in its action and failed to respond to her riding when put under pressure.  A veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no abnormalities.


On arrival on course Honeymoon Cruise was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and deemed unfit to run.  Acting on this advice Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the mare at 12:00 pm.

S Cunningham, representing trainer Ms M Cunningham, advised that he would be instructing the rider to attempt to settle Merging, which raced in a more forward position than intended at its last start, further back in the field today.  Merging was ridden accordingly.

Spy School was a late scratching by order of the Stewards at 1:32pm after dislodging its rider and refusing to procced to the barriers.  As this was the third occasion that Spy School has performed in this manner within eight months, trainer R Gane, was notified that Spy School was now suspended from racing until it performs to the satisfaction of the Stewards in two official barrier trails, at which time it must proceed to the barriers without delay.

Stewards ordered the following deductions to betting: All monies bet for a win/or place and concession betting on Spy School to be refunded. All successful bets on horses prior to the time of withdrawal of Spy School to be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: win bets (1 – 9 Charge West) zero cents; place bets (1– 9 Charge West) two cents; place bets (2– 6 Spanish Vixen) three cents; place bets (3– 1 Bangles) five cents.  All monies bet after the Stewards declaration of withdrawal to be paid at face value of ticket.

Prior to correct weight H McKechnie, rider of Call Me Coco, viewed Stewards patrol video before deciding not to lodge an objection against Rox My Sox being declared fourth placegetter.

Lakeside Lass over-raced during the early and middle stages.

Charge West raced wide, without cover.

Near the 800m Suryana, when over-racing, shifted out taking Charge West to a four-wide position.

Rounding the home turn Bangles and Rox My Sox were held up when unable to obtain clear running.

Call Me Coco was held up from the 600m and near the 400m had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Rox My Sox and Bangles, which had shifted out marginally to obtain clear running.

Call Me Coco was again held up and from the top of the straight and near the 100 metres had to be steadied when disppointed for a run between Spanish Vixen and Rox My Sox, both of which shifted ground.

For a short distance approaching the passing the 100m Bangles had difficulty in obtaining clear running.


Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer, P Moody, for his late arrival on course.

Fresnel was marginally slow to begin.

Near the 1000m Jahan, when laying out and racing ungenerously, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Lachie’s A Star (J Bowditch) which shifted in when not quite clear.  J Bowditch was notified that he must ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground at all times.

Fresnel layed-in in the straight.


Passing the 1000m Nastrada had to be steadied off the heels of Uno Whats, which shifted out.

Rounding the home turn and again approaching the winning post Nastrada had a tendency to lay out.

When questioned J Bowditch, rider of Clear Direction, stated that the filly hung-out badly and for this reason he was unable to ride Clear Direction out in his normal manner rounding the turn and in the early part of the straight. J Bowditch added that the filly failed to respond to his riding when tested at the 100 metres and that in his opinion it did not handle today’s firm track conditions.  A veterinary examination of the filly revealed a laceration to the near-hind leg.

Race 5KOOKABURRA MOTEL 0-68 HANDICAP - 1109 metres:

Acting on a confirmed telephone call from K Vella, trainer of Zupatwo, who advised that the gelding had a high temperature and was unfit to run,  Stewards ordered the scratching of the gelding at 9:30 am.  K Vella, will produce a veterinary certificate in respect of Zupatwo.

After being loaded in its barrier stall Empress Zakynthos reared dislodging its rider, T Neve.  Empress Zakynthos subsequently underwent a veterinary examination and was passed fit to run.  T Neve was examined by the medical officers and passed fit to ride.

Prince Fireball was slow to begin (1.5 L).

For a short distance rounding the home turn Sierra De Oro was held up, when unable to obtain clear running.

Black Jack Boy had some difficulty in obtaining a clear run at the 100m.

Inside the 50m Sierra De Oro, when obtaining a neat run between Prince Fireball and Delta Rho Sam, then brushed Delta Rho Sam, which shifted out marginally and brushed Mossadina.

Approaching the winning post Delta Rho Sam had to be steadied when tightened for room between Sierra De Oro and Mossadina, which shifted in slightly before being straightened by its rider.

Race 6GRAMPIANS HALLS GAP CUP - 1310 metres: 

Viva Delspec and Hell’s Kitchen were both slow to begin (1 L).

More Than A Monty, which had been restless in its barrier, was also slow to begin (2 L).

Covered In Class jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

Covered In Class layed out rounding the turn and in the straight.

Freshwater Storm layed out rounding the home turn.

Near the 300m the off-side winker on Freshwater Storm became dislodged.

L Meech, rider of Covered In Class, which performed below market expectations, stated that the gelding raced best when able to lead.  A  veterinary examination of Covered In Class revealed the gelding was showing signs of lameness in the near-hind leg.  Trainer, P Moody, was advised that prior to racing again he must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate of fitness for Covered In Class.

Race 7GRAMPIANS CHALETS F & m 0-62 HANDICAP - 1310 metres:

After being placed in the barriers Whispering Miss became extremely fractious. Whispering Miss ++was removed from the barriers, examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to run. Rider S Vella who was struck in the head by Whispering Miss was examined by the medical officers and passed fit to ride.

Engrave was slow to begin (1 L).

Whispering Miss was marginally slow to begin.

Perfect Jay raced wide, without cover.

Near the 800m Lightly had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Whispering Miss (S Vella), which shifted in when not quite clear.  S Vella was severely reprimanded and advised that he must be two lengths clear when shifting ground in future.

When the pace steadied near the 700m Lightly had to be eased off the heels of Whispering Miss.  Vertigo, which was following, was steadied in consequence.

From rounding the home turn Lightly was held up for clear running and went to the line untested.

Engrave was disappointed for a run at the entrance to the straight to the inside of Lightly.  Engrave then shifted to the outside of Lightly and was again disappointed for a run where there was insufficient room between that mare and Vertigo.

After passing the 200m Choisance had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Princess Victoria and Smiling Hussy.

Over the concluding stages Vertigo had to be steadied off the heels of Princess Victoria.

Approaching the winning post Engrave  had to be steadied off the heels of Perfect Jay.

Race 8QUARRY RESTAURANT 0-62 HANDICAP - 1618 metres:

Runaway Princess, which had been marginally slow to begin, was then checked when tightened for room between God’s On Track and Perilous Moment, both of which shifted ground.

Supreme De Lago raced wide, without cover until near the 700m.

Sigidas over-raced during the middle stages.

Approaching the 300m God’s On Track broke down in the near foreleg and gave ground quickly.  As a consequence Sigidas, which was following, shifted out abruptly to avoid God’s On Track and in doing so took Carnegie Flyer out onto Queen Of Franks, which brushed Stable Star. During this incident Runaway Princess was also inconvenienced.
