Race 1MAZDA 2 SV 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1000 metres:

Due to rider Brent Evans being delayed in traffic en-route to the course, Stewards approved Nikita Mclean as the replacement rider upon SHARMARINO.

MILLIE’S MANN that took charge of its rider en route to the barriers, underwent a pre race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start.

SHARMARINO underwent a pre race veterinary examination after the filly was found to have blood in its mouth as a result of a minor tongue laceration.  SHARMARINO was passed fit to start.

LUNA LANG over raced through the early and middle stages.

ARGENTINIAN raced wide without cover.

MEGA CASH was held up rounding the home turn and until passing the 200 metres.

When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of SHARMARINO, Trainer Barbara Marshman explained the filly had been slow to begin at its first career race start before being obliged to race wide at its second race start.  B Marshman added SHARMARINO has had a breathing abnormality, however the filly had been working well leading into today’s event.

The winner SHARMARINO was retained on course three hours in order for additional blood samples to be collected from the filly.

Race 2 – MAZDA 3 MAIDEN PLATE - 1000 metres:

ANGEL’S GIFT that was having its first race start since August 2011, underwent a pre race veterinary examination and was deemed fit to start.

Stewards approved apprentice Belinda Carlile as the rider upon KENTUCKY TREASURE as no alternate senior rider was available to replace Christine Puls.

MANNACONI jumped away awkwardly before being bumped after the start by GRASSLANDS GIRL which shifted out.

MANNACONI over raced through the early stages.

PRINCESS D’ORSAY commenced to hang out from the 600 metres.

GEM DIGGER raced wide and without cover.  GEM DIGGER was under pressure from the 500 metres before being eased down by its rider, Damien Thornton. Upon return to scales, D. Thornton reported in his opinion something was amiss with the mare and a post race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.   GEM DIGGER will be required to trial competitively in an Official Trial before next being presented to race. Co-trainer, Don Campbell indicated he would not be continuing with the mare’s preparation.

KENTUCKY TREASURE was severely held up from the 200 metres and went to the line not fully tested.

Rider Timothy Bell reported FLIRTATIOUS GIRL had a tendency to hang out from the 600 metres.

MAPUCHE had difficulty obtaining clear running inside the final 100 metres.

GRASSLANDS GIRL had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight.

The winner MANNACONI was retained on course three hours for additional blood samples to be collected from the gelding.

PHASE ANGLE was inconvenienced after the start when tightened between FLEET STAR and HARRY’S ON SONG that shifted out.

GAME SPIRIT was slow to begin.

SHADOW IN THE SKY over raced through the early and middle stages. Approaching the 1000 metres when over racing, SHADOW IN THE SKY shifted out and away from the heels of DIGBY ROAD.  SHADOW IN THE SKY was then obliged to race wide and without cover.  When questioned, rider Brent Evans stated he was instructed to endeavour to obtain cover in an attempt to have his mount settle.

Approaching the 400 metres DIGBY ROAD shifted out to improve its position and in doing so eased FLEET STAR wider on the track.

HARRY’S ON SONG that settled outside the leader was under pressure from the 500 metres before being eased down and placed a distant last.  A post race veterinary examination of HARRY’S ON SONG revealed the gelding to be experiencing atrial fibrillation. Trainer, Jarrod McLean, was advised HARRY’S ON SONG would not be permitted to start in a race until undergoing a further veterinary examination including an ECG performed at rest and cardiac auscultation performed within thirty minutes of completing a satisfactory gallop of at least 1000 metres.

Race 5 – WARRNAMBOOL MAZDA BM72 HANDICAP - 1700 metres:

Correct Weight was delayed to enable Damian Lane, rider of SINGLE WARRIOR that was officially placed second by the Judge to view a replay of the home straight with a view to lodging an Objection.  Having viewed such film, D. Lane was satisfied there were insufficient grounds for an Objection and Correct Weight was declared on the Judge’s placings.  It was established approaching the 100 metres, the whip of Jordan Childs (ANGELOLOGY (NZ) accidentally struck the nose of SINGLE WARRIOR on one occasion.

HAROLDHAUT stood flat footed as the start was affected and was subsequently slow to begin.

BABY BOY was also marginally slow to begin.

Approaching the 1400 metres KING’S DEMAND commenced to over race getting its head up.  HAROLDHAUT that was trailing was also eased away from the heels of KING’S DEMAND.

Upon return to scales Harry Coffey reported in his opinion HAROLDHAUT was not suited racing at the rear of the field.  HAROLDHAUT weakened over the latter stages and was placed a distant last.  A post race veterinary examination of HAROLDHAUT revealed no abnormalities. A warning was issued against the performance of HAROLDHAUT for being uncompetitive and inconsistent. Co-Trainers Terry and Karina O’Sullivan will be contacted in the ensuing days to establish if any matter had arisen that may explain the performance of HAROLDHAUT.

Rider, Jordan Childs (ANGELOLOGY (NZ), was severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR 137 A (4)(b) for using his whip in an action where his arm was raised above shoulder height.  J Childs was further spoken to advisedly regarding his actions that resulted in SINGLE WARRIOR being struck over the nose by his whip.

Race 6 – FAMILY STYLE CX9 0-62 HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

TESTAWAN bounded as the start was affected and subsequently settled at the rear of the field. Correct Weight was delayed to enable Fabian Alesci, rider of TESTAWAN to view a replay of the start.  F Alesci was satisfied there was no outside influence affecting the manner in which TESTAWAN began and therefore had no Objection against the start.

MR MINX jumped away awkwardly and shifted out abruptly before being steadied away from the heels of MYSTERY BLITZ.

THE MAN IN BLACK was slow to begin.

Approaching the 900 metres, NORDIC MONARCH shifted out inconveniencing DINNER ON TIGES.

Shortly after passing the 800 metres, THE MAN IN BLACK had to be checked off the heels of MILWAUKEE BELLE.

DINNER ON TIGES and NORTHERN GEM raced wide without cover.

Approaching the 400 metres, HIGH CLASS LADY was held up and had to be steadied to avoid the heels of MILWAUKEE BELLE.

MANGO MOJITO had a tendency to lay in, in the home straight.

MYSTERY BLITZ was held up for the entire home straight and went to the line not fully tested.

TESTAWN had difficulty obtaining clear running inside the final 150 metres.

Rider, Jarrod Fry, was questioned regarding his tactics adopted upon DENIM’S GIFT which led today’s event.  J Fry stated he was instructed to endeavour to obtain a forward position with cover, however ultimately it was not his intention to lead the field.   Trainer, Mark Greig confirmed the instructions and the comments were noted.

Correct Weight was further delayed to enable Luke Londregan, rider of MILWAUKEE BELLE that was officially placed fourth by the Judge to view a replay of the home straight.  Having viewed such film, L Londregan lodged an Objection against NORDIC MONARCH (Josh Cartwright) that was officially placed third by the Judge alleging interference over the final 200 metres.  On the evidence it was established shortly after passing the 200 metres, NORDIC MONARCH shifted in under pressure taking MILWAUKEE BELLE in off its course.  L Londregan has however continued to ride MILWAUKEE BELLE along with the use of his whip. Stewards were of the view the degree of interference did not warrant amending the placings. The Objection was dismissed and Correct Weight declared on the Judge’s numbers.

At a subsequent inquiry, rider J Cartwright pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a).  It was alleged at approximately the 150 metres, J Cartwright permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of MILWAUKEE BELLE which was taken in off its course resulting in LECONI being checked and losing its rightful position. Further, LECONI has been taken in onto MYSTERY BLITZ that has brushed the running rail when tightened.  The licence of J Cartwright to ride in races was suspended for a period of seven meetings commencing midnight 12/11/2012 and concluding midnight 18/11/2012 (5 provincial/2 metropolitan).  In assessing penalty, the Panel took into account the circumstances, J Cartwright’s record, guilty plea and deemed the incident to be in the low range.

Further L Londregan (MILWAUKEE BELLE) will be referred to the Apprentice Skills Review Panel given his lack of care displayed to his riding colleagues during this incident when at no stage did he stop riding and straighten his mount in order to avoid interference to those to his inside.  It was also noted near the 50 metres L Londregan permitted MILWAUKEE BELLE to shift in marginally resulting in DENIM’S GIFT being momentarily tightened.

Race 7 – BT-50 UTE GIVES YOU MORE 0-62 HANDICAP - 2225 metres:

Stewards ordered the late scratching of WHYMOL at 7:42am acting on veterinary advice when Trainer Rhoda Handyside advised the mare was lame.

Stewards further ordered the late scratching of ROYAL KATSU at 8:12am acting on veterinary advice when Trainer Peter Lafferty advised the gelding was lame in the near hind.

RAEL RULES jumped away awkwardly.

SHOSHONEE raced three wide through the early stages before crossing to obtain the lead near the 1400 metres.

BALLISTIC RULER was restrained from the start and settled at the rear of the field. BALLISTIC RULER trailed the field throughout and was uncompetitive.  Rider Kate Walters reported BALLISTIC RULER was never comfortable in the run.  Trainer Barry Crofts explained BALLISTIC RULER may be holding its breath in its races and indicated he was not going to continue with the gelding’s preparation. BALLISTIC RULER will be required to compete competitively in an Official Trial before next being presented to race.

Shortly after passing the 400 metres ICECONI was briefly tightened for room between STREETS APART which was shifting out and OUR TIGER LIL.

ICECONI gave ground over the final 250 metres.  Rider Fabian Alesci reported the mare had come to the end of its preparation.  Trainer Matthew Williams confirmed ICECONI would be sent for a spell.  A post race veterinary examination of ICECONI did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Passing the 200 metres rider Carryn Downie (CITY STYLE) lost use of her whip.
